Word Study

I have added a new goal to my list of professional development plans for this year. WORD STUDY! For the remainder of the year I will be meeting with the lovely Ann Dettmann (our LC) for coaching sessions. We will be meeting every month to go through the red Fountas and Pinnell Phonics Lessons book and talk about how to best teach the lessons to my students and then she will observe me teach the lesson. I am excited about this because if any of you have taught from this book it does not go in order and it jumps all over the place. This drives me crazy because I like things in order and nice and neat! Ahh! Those of you who have used this book for teaching phonics.word study. What do you think about it? I am excited to dive deeper in to this book and learn new ways to teach me students!

  1. My experiences with the Word Study program is that is takes a tremendous amount of preparation for the majority of the lessons. The games and centers are fantastic and the kids really learn from them. However, like anything, time limitations is a huge issue with the demands of all subjects areas for us in 4th grade. We focus on the skills and patterns of the words. We give them a list with pattern words and we practice them all week. Not sure if this really helps, but good luck!

  2. We are thinking of supplementing with "Words Their Way" in first grade because we are having some of the same challenges. Last summer as a team we spent time putting the lessons in separate manila folders with scanned in pictures of the anchor chart and lesson materials tapped on the front. It has been very helpful. We are also struggling with the bouncing around. We have done our best to change the order of the lessons to be sure they have more of a logical progression. We have also had to use some of the lessons with the top 25 % of the class. Good Luck!

  3. When I was teaching 3rd grade, I spent a summer prepping activities for the F and P Word Study lessons. Literally--the entire summer. In the end, though, it was so worth it. We were addressing the same concepts as we had done the previous year, but the students were much more engaged when it was hands on and, often, with a group of friends. I loved it once I had all of the resources compiled, but it is quite the undertaking to get to that point.

  4. What all of you are saying is what we are finding. It is a ton of prep work for a small lesson. I know some of the lessons can't be reproduced because they involve the students names. I am also finding that when we are supposed to teach the lessons is not matching up with where students should be at that particular time of the year...at least for first grade! I agree, Emily that supplementing is key because the students aren't getting the strong core in phonics that they need with the red F&P book! Also, maybe you can share with me the order you came up with that seems more like a logical progression! :)
