Magnetic Letters

Just wanted to share the excitement kids get when we just let them be kids sometimes. I had a fancy lesson plan with all these steps and procedures and I noticed that the class was enjoying the first step and really thinking about the process of making words. I realized that sometimes we forget to make learning simple and fun. The concept was difficult but since they were having fun manipulating the magnets and making real words and Dr. Suess words they forgot about how challenging it was and really thought about each word.

  1. I totally agree with you on the simple part. I've noticed this in physical education too. Some times the kids just need time to play with and explore equipment instead of having a constructed lesson all the time. We're practicing this right now with our first and second graders with our manipulative skills using a deck ring. We give them exploration time to test out the equipment. I often forget that some equipment we use is not your common household piece of athletic equipment. I've enjoyed seeing the kids explore their creativity in this process.

  3. I agree with both of you. I think that sometimes, as teachers and adults, we forget how to appreciate the simple things in our classrooms, or the gym, and in our every day lives. I think that is the most refreching part of teaching first graders...they find joy and excitement in the little things. I find myself in awe somedays when I see that something as little as a new book, magnetic letters, water colors, or even a magnet, can spark the creativity in the minds of the little ones. It gives me hope that young kids do still have a littel imagination left in them!
