Rowdy Kids

Today our 1st graders were a little crazy. I'm not sure if it was because today was the first day back from a long weekend or what, but they were having behavioral issues. Numerous kids were tattling on each other, asking to go to the bathroom during the warm-up, and struggling with keeping their hands to themselves etc. We finished the warm-up but instead of transitioning into the lesson, we did an activity with a CD. We performed two exercises to the song "knuckles knees" and "spin again." This seemed to help get the wiggles out. We did not get to the lesson as planned, but I felt the class was more productive with a modified lesson after the songs. I think it's important as teachers that we know it's okay to deviate from the lesson plan. If we notice things are not working that typically do with our students, it is perfectly fine to switch things up and we have to in some situations.

  1. I completely agree! I often see the same thing between my morning and afternoon class. Typically, my morning class is more focused, productive, and calm. My afternoon group needs a lot more reminders and I can often tell that they are having trouble paying attention. It's really tempting to push through the lessons anyhow because I feel as though I need to make sure both the afternoon and the morning kids are introduced to the same content. Whenever I choose to push through with my afternoon, though, I get to the end of the day completely exhausted from all the redirection I have done. I appreciate your reminder to give them what they need so that the rest of the time is more productive.

  2. I agree as well that sometimes you have to deviate from your original lesson plans, depending on other things going on. I have found that if you were to continue with your planned lesson, even with the behavorial issues continuing, the lesson may become ineffective or students may not complete the lesson objective you had planned.

  3. Thank you for the reminder! I know I sometimes feel a lot of pressure to get all the lessons and objectives and assessments fit in but they won't be learning it if I just push through it so I might as well take the time to reteach procedures, expected behaviors and just have some fun.
