As part of my documentation process, I need to conduct observations for some of my students. When I enter the room, however, their environment changes, now I am in it :), and I feel that my data gets skewed. I am looking for any thoughts that people may have on how to reduce this reactivity element when I am performing observations... thanks!
That happened to one of my students last year. I worked with the OT and gave her a specific time to come in when the student would be working in a group and I made sure they were in a corner of the room so they couldn't see the adult as easily.
ReplyDeleteYou could also borrow an iPad and have it set up like a hidden camera in the room. Or better yet, you could have the homeroom teacher carrying the iPad around, but focusing the camera on the student you need to observe. This would eliminate the change in environment. Let me know if it works.
ReplyDeleteYes! I need to figure out some way to be invisible, thanks for the ideas! I want to try some recording with the flip-phones we have. You have an iPad for me Ted? :).
ReplyDeleteI do not have an iPad for you, but I know where to get one from the school!
