It is getting that time of year when students know what consequences will come if they choose to be off task. I have been doing my best to be patient and continue my love and logic strategies. At this time of year I find myself trying to get through all the testing and often choosing the consequence for them. I need to keep remembering that consequence won't have as much impact or meaning if they don't come up with it. I am going to try my best to stay patient. Anyone else have trouble with this at this time of year? Any ideas?
I've been struggling with this same issue, Emily. One thing I want to set up, (although it may be a little bit late this year), is a problem solving folder for my students who seem to have developed the habit of repeating the same problems. I would like to set up a chart with the problem and what the student had done in the past to fix the problem. That way, when the problem comes up again. I can ask them to take out their folder and pick one of the "successful" solutions they have come up with in the past. I would still need to facilitate the initial problem solving session. But, it would help them identify their own solution for repeated problems in the future.
ReplyDeleteI love this idea! I'd be tempted to have a classwide binder at my level as my students often experience the same problems again and again. We could talk about certain problems together and brainstorm different ways to fix the problems. Students could certainly choose other solutions if they have ideas, but this would be a great resource for students who are stuck.
ReplyDeleteI really like this idea! I really want to remember this - either tracking solutions for individual students, or talking about problems that may arise and brainstorming some possible solutions for students to try if they run into them. (It gives a whole different twist to "Would you like to hear what some other kids have tried?" when you can say "Would you like to take a look at some of the solutions we came up with earlier?") Great idea, Ryan!
